Unlock a New Career with Locksmithing

Unlock the key to a new career as a locksmith. Locksmiths install and repair locks and safes. In order to start in this career, you will need training covering an introduction into lock functions, pin tumbler locks, types of keys, deadbolts, door installations, and even automotive locks.

Training Requirements for a Locksmithing Career

While there are no stringent prerequisite qualifications, The Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) grants professional certification. To ensure proficiency and professionalism in the industry, ALOA has created the following designations:

• Registered Locksmith (RL).This designation is for an active locksmith who has received completed training consisting of twelve eight-hour classes (ALOA Education Units, or AEUs). An RL is recognized for training or experience, but is not tested or certified.
• Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL). This designation is awarded to you if you complete ten mandatory AOLA training categories plus two electives.
• Certified Professional Locksmith (CPL). This designation is awarded if you have the CRL designation plus 12 electives.
• Certified Master Locksmith (CML). A Certified Master Locksmith has reached the highest level of ALOA’s Proficiency Registration Program and has successfully demonstrated proficiency in ninety percent of the available categories through ALOA.

You Hold the Key to Your Future with Locksmithing

Many locksmiths, with the appropriate training, open their own successful businesses. With security and safety playing an important part in our ever-changing lives, the demand for qualified locksmiths with the right skills and training should continue to be strong.
