Training Requirements for a Locksmithing Career
While there are no stringent prerequisite qualifications, The Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) grants professional certification. To ensure proficiency and professionalism in the industry, ALOA has created the following designations:
• Registered Locksmith (RL).This designation is for an active locksmith who has received completed training consisting of twelve eight-hour classes (ALOA Education Units, or AEUs). An RL is recognized for training or experience, but is not tested or certified.
• Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL). This designation is awarded to you if you complete ten mandatory AOLA training categories plus two electives.
• Certified Professional Locksmith (CPL). This designation is awarded if you have the CRL designation plus 12 electives.
• Certified Master Locksmith (CML). A Certified Master Locksmith has reached the highest level of ALOA’s Proficiency Registration Program and has successfully demonstrated proficiency in ninety percent of the available categories through ALOA.
