Automotive Technician Programs
Automotive technicians are trained to inspect and repair any number of engine or electrical problems in cars and trucks. After getting a description of the problem from the owner, as an automotive technician you will use computers and diagnostic equipment to find the source. Each system in the engine can be isolated and checked for problems or components that need to be replaced like belts, hoses and plugs.
Training in Automotive Technician
Community colleges offer automotive technician training in one-year training or two-year degree programs. Vocational and technical schools also offer programs and ASE certification in automotive technician. You will learn cars from the inside out, including their engines, frames, suspension and more. There are a number of tools to learn in an automotive technician program: screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches are available in all sizes. You will also learn to handle air wrenches, lathes and grinders, jacks and hoists, as well as tools to weld and cut metal. Computer skills for diagnostic tests and record-keeping will round out your training program.
Careers as an Automotive Technician
As an automotive technician, you can work in a number of garages or repair shops. Transmission technicians focus on the changing of gears, tune-up technicians keep your car starting. There are also specialists for air conditioning systems, alignment and brakes. You can specialize in brakes, alignment or transmission problems. Automotive service technicians and mechanics can make an hourly rate of ten to twenty dollars per hour, but salaried positions are available with the government, dealerships, and rental agencies.
