What Does a Job in Appliance Repair Involve?

Home owners depend upon you to fix their appliances. Some specialize on small alliances such as microwaves while others work solely with large appliances such as refrigerators or washing machines. You will need to determine the cause of the problem, repair appliances or replace parts, and use testing devices like ammeters or voltmeters. You may also help install new appliances, which can involve connecting pipes from the appliance to the gas line.  Finally, you need to know how to keep records of the parts used, the hours work, prepare bills, and collect payments.

What Training or Degree Do You Need for an Appliance Repair Job?

You can attend a program at a community college, trade school, or one sponsored by the appliance manufacturer. Employers tend to prefer candidates who have completed a formal training program, especially one with courses in electronics. These can take up to 2 years to complete.

Courses can include:

•    Reading schematic drawings
•    Analyzing problems
•    Determine whether to repair or replace parts
•    Safety procedures

To undergo warranty work by manufacturers, you must usually attend periodic training sessions as well. And, to work with refrigerators, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that you be certified in the proper handling of refrigerants.

There are also voluntary certification exams you can complete to prove proficiency to potential employers, like the National Appliance Service Technician Certification (NASTeC).

Career Outlook and Salary Ranges

The best job prospects will be for those with formal training in appliance repair, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Average annual earnings are $ 32,180.
