American Sentinel was founded as a Vanderbilt University Technology Company in 1988. It is a solely online campus specializing in both undergraduate and graduate programs in business, information technology, and healthcare. American Sentinel University offers more than 15 online degree programs taught by faculty members of whom more than half hold a PhD in their field.

American Sentinel offers everything from Associate Degrees to MBAs. Class schedules are flexible and are built for students who need to work full-time while attending college. Students are offered both federal loan and grant programs in order to help pay for tuition costs.
