Online Masters Degree in Hospitality Management

If you're ready to move up the hospitality management ladder, take your party planning skills and your coveted title as "most gracious host" to the next level with a master's degree. Soon, you could be managing a hotel or a restaurant or even thinking about opening your own bed and breakfast.

Many hospitality training programs are available, both on campus and online. You can choose from concentrations like information technology, research, global tourism, ecotourism or casino management.

Earning master's degrees in hospitality management

Core coursework covers general business topics such as budgeting, corporate strategy, finance, human resources organizational management. Additional classes for master's degrees in hospitality management may include these:

  1. Applied research and statistics
  2. Customer service
  3. Information systems
  4. Legal and ethical issues
  5. Service marketing

You can select other courses based on your interests -- data analysis, consumer behavior, branding, event management, tourism economics, sustainable operations, marketing, social media or security management. The Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms the importance of computer skills and Internet savvy for those working in advertising and marketing.

Programs may require prior experience for admission, and some schools set up internships in the industry. If you have extended ambitions, a Ph.D. can prepare you for university faculty positions or research roles in academia, government or the private sector.

Hospitality management career outlook and salaries

For lodging managers, the BLS projects modest employment growth between 2010 and 2020. Job growth is not predicted for food service managers. Advertising, promotions and marketing managers have average growth potential of 14 percent, while meeting, convention and event planners should see much faster than average growth, with gains of 44 percent. The BLS reports the following median annual salaries for these careers in 2010:

  1. Meeting, convention and event planner: $45,260
  2. Food service manager: $48,130
  3. Lodging manager: $46,880
  4. Advertising, promotions and marketing manager: $108,260

Management positions typically require work experience, and marketing managers and event planners usually need a college degree as well. The BLS notes that in this competitive landscape, particularly in the restaurant and lodging industries, a degree in the field can be an advantage for job applicants.

Hospitality is defined as "the friendly reception and treatment of guests or strangers," and it's time to turn those strangers into guests. Online programs let you continue at your current job while you earn your degree in hospitality management.
