Online Masters Degree in Event Management

Can you imagine the serious skills involved in organizing the Super Bowl halftime show? If that kind of challenge appeals to you, you could find work with an events management consulting company or even open a firm of your own. Opportunities include organizing major sports events and music concerts as well as promoting arts and culture events in your community. A master's degree in event management can provide the education and abilities you need to "get the show on the road."

Earning master's degrees in event management

Studies build research methodologies and management skills, and concentrations range from sports management to arts and culture. Some schools offer hospitality and tourism management programs with an event and meeting planning concentration.

Coursework can cover catering, leadership, organizational behavior, legal issues, economics and financial accounting, contract negotiations, strategic marketing and media relations, and conference and exposition management. Specialized subjects encompass sports philosophy and ethics, professional and intercollegiate sports events, crowd control, risk management, emergency action planning and non-profit methodologies.

Event management career options, outlook and salaries

Career options include managers of stadiums, arenas, golf courses, and convention and conference centers, as well as event planners and event security personnel. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the following median career salaries in 2010:

  1. Advertising and promotions manager: $83,890
  2. Marketing manager: $112,800
  3. Meeting, convention and event planner: $45,260
  4. Social and community service manager: $57,950
  5. Public relations/fund raising manager: $91,810
  6. Public relations specialist: $52,090

The BLS predicts a rapid increase in employment of 44 percent for meeting, convention and event planners between 2010 and 2020. Public relations specialists and social and community services managers should see faster than average growth. The BLS expects job openings in the other occupations listed here to grow at an average rate.

Although the entry-level qualification for these careers is a bachelor's degree, more employers are looking for candidates with master's degrees, according to the BLS. Doctoral programs target areas like tourism and hospitality management, hotel administration, or sports and recreation administration; doctorates can lead to academic research and teaching positions or consulting.

Online programs for master's degrees in event planning may require short residencies, but coursework is generally available online. Entertainment is big business; an online degree in event management could put you in the running to manage the next big sports event or music festival.
