Online Statistics Course Degrees

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers' Job Outlook 2012, mathematics -- including statistics -- is the most in-demand science degree for 2012. Online statistics degree programs prepare you to deal intelligently with data, a critical skill in many different contexts, from finance to marketing to R&D.

Statistics is the systematic analysis and interpretation of data. In this field, you may design studies to collect data samples, and then employ statistical methods to extract useful conclusions from the data. Statistics plays an important role in public policy, market research, business analysis, and natural and social science research. Specializations include fields like applied statistics and demography, or an applied professional specialty such as actuary, market research analyst, econometrician or computer systems analyst.

Statistics: education and training

Online statistics degrees are available at the bachelor's level and beyond, through the Ph.D. The statistics curriculum covers topics such as regression analysis, sampling methodology and experiment design, multivariate methods, and mathematical statistics.

Most statistics jobs, including those with the federal government, require at least a bachelor's degree. Mid-career professionals can take advantage of convenient online statistics degree programs, honing their quantitative skills through an undergraduate or graduate program. For established statisticians, a master's degree can serve as a ticket to advancement. Certificates are also available through online statistics degree programs.

Career outlook and salary

Diverse careers are related to statistics, and most show strong growth potential and compensation. Statisticians, who usually have a graduate degree, earned a mean yearly salary of $76,070 in 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Statisticians can expect 13 percent growth in the 2008-2018 period, which is about as fast as average. The BLS reports that financial analysts can look forward to 20 percent growth; these professionals earned a mean annual wage of $86,040 in 2010.

Given the importance of statistics in society, even workers in non-quantitative fields like business management, communication, advertising or K-12 education can benefit from a background in this field.

What's affecting the field of statistics?

Quantitative skills and the ability to make decisions using hard data rank high on the list of most valued job skills. Technology is changing the discipline of statistics, increasing the amount of data available and empowering analysts to slice and present data sets instantly. Online statistics degrees offer training in advanced data analysis, arming you with a critical tool in today's information economy.
