What will I learn in a music theory degree or training program?

Music theory degrees and training programs are an introduction to the theory behind how music works.  You are already aware of what sort of music you like but knowing the theory will explain why to you. There are certain tricks we can use to make people happy or sad using music, just as an example, another would be the way in which different beats and rhythms change the way you perceive a piece. Music theory degrees and training programs are quite different from music lessons or classes: those are trying to teach you how to play an instrument or to sing. Music theory is trying to teach you a deeper understanding of why things are done the way they are in music.
 

What will a music theory degree or training program qualify me for?

A proper understanding of music is simply part of being educated, a vital part in fact of any liberal arts education. It's almost a part of civilization itself. It's not necessary to be able to play or sing (highly enjoyable though those skills are) but to understand how it works is one of the most satisfying skills you can gain. Music theory degrees or training programs are also a vital part of the training if you want to become either a musician or a music teacher (some become very rich doing this but the average pay is around $20 an hour) as well as being one of those pieces of education that will enrich your life.
