Online Creative Writing Degrees

They say poets are born and not made. There’s some truth in that, but lots of folk have some creative writing talent and a creative writing program will help you develop both your  creative writing potential and English language skills.

At undergraduate level you are most likely to undertake your creative writing training as part of a wider English or literature degree program.  A creative writing concentration will offer courses such as

•    Short story writing
•    Poetry writing
•    Drama and script writing
•    The craft of creative writing

You will benefit from training in technique and analysis of the work of successful creative writers. You will be encouraged to develop your writing abilities and to explore a variety of literary genres and styles.  A creative writing degree program will not put in what nature left out. It will, however, develop your innate gifts, and broaden your understanding of literature and language.

Careers and salaries in creative writing

While the career path may be interesting and challenging after a degree training as a creative writer, your skills can have wide application. Investigate the market thoroughly. It may be tough to earn a living as a poet, but perhaps you can turn your gifts to writing advertising copy, work in public relations or as a technical or Internet writer. If you have the right instincts, then journalism may make a good career for you.

Earnings are highly variable.  In May 20045 the median yearly earnings for salaried writers were $44,350. Last year Dan Brown of The Da Vinci Code fame made a cool $88 million. Where in between do you see yourself?
