Online Information Technology Degrees

An Education in Information Technology

The world of information technology is dominated by change. Those seeking a degree in this field should prepare themselves for a fast-paced job where every day is different. Changes in technology and software require constant attention in the maintenance of the various computer and network systems for which IT professionals are responsible. A degree in information technology is therefore only the beginning.

Degree Programs Vary

A program in information technology will take you through the theoretical side to the business as well as the hands-on training needed to succeed on the job. Typical coursework might cover such topics as:

  • History of modern computing
  • Networking
  • Database management
  • Systems analysis

Many in this field take industry certification programs in order to further their training and therefore their value to prospective employers. Some of the top certifications are in A++, Microsoft's MCSE and Cisco's CCNA. Additionally, ongoing training is critical in this field in order to keep up with advancements in both hardware and software.

Earnings Potential

A career in information technology can be quite lucrative. In addition to large salaries, compensation packages often include handsome benefit packages and stock options. In May 2004 the U.S. Department of Labor reported median annual earnings of $92,570 for managers in information technology. The minimum educational requirement for entry-level jobs is usually a bachelor's degree. For the more senior positions employers will be looking for individuals with a master's degree, extensive training, and experience in the field.
