Online Financial Management Degrees

Financial Management Careers

Jobs in financial management are generally top-level positions requiring a highly refined skill set. Those interested in making a career in financial management should have excellent math and analytical skills. Attention to detail, extensive knowledge of financial laws and regulations, and a solid foundation in business are just some of the needs employers have when looking for financial managers. A bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement, but senior positions will require a master's degree, more training, and experience.

A Degree in Financial Management

The job outlook for financial managers is good, with employment growth expected to grow as fast as average. As most jobs are manager level or higher, competition for jobs could be strong. The best candidates should have extensive training and a master's degree in financial management, or an MBA with a concentration in financial management. Typical coursework in financial management might cover:

  • Financial accounting
  • Management accounting
  • Taxation
  • Multinational finance
  • E-commerce

Earnings

This job can pay very well, though actual pay will vary widely by industry and experience. In May 2004 the U.S. Dept. of Labor reported annual average earnings for financial managers at $81,880. However, a 2005 survey by top financial staffing firm Robert Half International reported earnings ranging from $78,500 to $178,250 for directors of finance. The schooling, training, and degree program needed to win a top can be very rewarding for those dedicated to a career in financial management.
