Online Entrepreneurship Degrees

Entrepreneurs use their passion and intelligence to start their own businesses in a broad range of industries. Entrepreneurship is considered a business specialization, and it is behind the founding of high-tech startups as well as video and disc rental shops. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that entrepreneurial drive plays a key role in the growth of the national economy. For self-sufficient, business-minded individuals who crave independence, entrepreneurship can offer opportunities as well as challenges.

Entrepreneurship: education and training

Starting your own company is perhaps the greatest adventure you can undertake in commerce. The BLS reports that only 74.4 percent of enterprises started in 2008 made it to their second year, and 62.4 percent made it to their third. Smart management is essential for economic survival, and online entrepreneurship degree programs can give you the skills you need to seek success.

There's no single educational path to entrepreneurship, a fact which is reflected by the variety of campus-based and online entrepreneurship degrees. If you already have years of management experience, you might consider an associate degree or certificate in the field to gain targeted knowledge. Online entrepreneurship degree programs could provide the flexibility for you to study while balancing your current job and your future business plans. If you're starting your education from square one, bachelor's or MBA degrees can offer a well-rounded education.

Career outlook and salary for entrepreneurs

As you might expect, salaries among entrepreneurs are varied and difficult to quantify. Scott Shane of SmallBizTrends put together a list of average revenue per business for some popular entrepreneur categories in 2008, created from data contained in the IRS Statistics of Income. Take a look at these examples of estimated annual revenues:

  1. Food services and drinking places: $110,310
  2. Furniture and related products: $86,236
  3. Gasoline stations: $1,326,263
  4. Motor vehicle parts and dealers: $278,475
  5. Videotape and disc rental: $110,705

Revenue to income varies strongly based on the product or service; for example, with gas station average net income at 0.4 percent of sales, average net income per business was only $4,644 in this case.

What's affecting entrepreneurs?

All enterprises are subject to economic trends, and small businesses are particularly at the mercy of the market. The BLS reports that 177,000 new businesses were created during the first quarter of 2009, while 226,000 shuttered their doors that same quarter.

Entrepreneurship still drives economic growth: In 2010, 2.5 million jobs were created by establishments less than 1 year old, according to the BLS. Longevity varies by industry; for example, health care typically shows one of the higher survival rates for new companies. Online entrepreneurship degrees can help you gain the skills to compete in this challenging business specialization.
