As the owner of MobileVet Memphis LLC, Moffat spends her days driving around town to visit clients and their pets in a custom-built $250,000 van, which is capable of handling most veterinary services. So far, she is racking up the miles.

Moffat launched MobileVet Memphis, www.mobilevetmemphis.com, in November after a few years of kicking the idea around and few months of planning once she decided to move forward. She had worked at McGehee Clinic for Animals from July 2002 through the end of last year, falling back to part-time as her business start date drew nearer.

Creating a mobile vet clinic offered a more flexible schedule that gave Moffat and her husband, Mark, more time with their children, ages 3 and 5. Also, as a vet in a traditional clinic for more than six years, Moffat saw that many clients needed the doctor to come to them.

Lavon Miller, HVAC instructor at Moultrie Tech says, “We can’t survive as a nation with out refrigeration at grocery stores, medical centers and hospitals so when everybody else won’t have a job I will. This is a very stable career field.”

Moultrie Tech HVAC student Tommy Rockwell says, “I just changed careers and I wanted something else and wanted to own my own business in the future and this is a perfect opportunity for me to get out there and start my own business.”

HVAC job salaries range from $30,000 to $60,000 a year. Officials say workers in this field often start their own business and enjoy flexible hours because of it.

HVAC technician programs can often be completed in less than 2 years, but many techs still learn “on the job”.  Those with training and certification will always be more employable than others who only have hands on training.

Experts say that engineers who understand embedded software, math modeling, and electronic controls will be in demand. Moreover, the new breed of engineers will have to be ready to work with foreign automakers and suppliers. They’ll have to deal with counterparts abroad, which will nearly eliminate time-honored methods of physical prototyping, thus thrusting them more deeply into virtual design.

“It’s not as if an engineer in this country will only design U.S. products,” Cole says. “They’ll be engineering products from all over the world. They’ll need to work in global collaborative environments, be strong in their engineering fundamentals, and be proficient in all manner of modeling and simulation.”

Ironically, the most valuable degree might be one in mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering degrees, however, will need to be augmented with experience or education in software or embedded controls.

“A few years ago, electrical engineering was the hottest degree,” Cole says. “But electronics ultimately need to be integrated into a product, so you need an engineer with a systems point of view.”

The MBA program at the Chancellor University System will be known as “The Jack Welch Institute” after the former GE powerhouse and will be mostly online. Bad smells are all in a day’s work for Black Diamond Plumbing & Electric, Vice President Scott Underwood said. The odors that come from pipes, blown fuse boxes, and old ventilation systems are not going to make their way into aromatherapy candles anytime soon.

Plumbing smells like, well, plumbing. But Underwood said it was the amperes, not the aroma, that dominate his concerns doing electrical work. On one recent job replacing a blown box at a nearby manufacturer, Underwood’s arms were jet black with insulation and grime.

“Electrical work is more dangerous than it is dirty, but it can be dirty, though,” Underwood said.

Underwood said that work on ventilation systems such as squirrel cage fans and blower motors can be black with soot. But nothing, he said, comes close to the smell of plumbing and sewer work. When workers leave the site when the job is done, the smell follows.

“You put your tools in the back of the truck on a 90-degree day, that’s bad,” Underwood said.

“Even in this economy, California needs more - and more diverse - health workers,” Brelvi said. “As our state grows and as the population gets larger and more diverse, this need will become even more urgent.”

Nationally, experts have talked about 2009 being a tough year for new college graduates. The National Association of Colleges and Employers, for example, said nearly two-thirds of seniors they surveyed are concerned about finding jobs.

Less than 20% of those who applied for jobs have been hired, the association reported last week.
