Gunsmithing Degree: Target a Specialized Career

Gunsmithing is a career that deals with the making, customization and repair of firearms. Earning a gunsmith degree will give you a practical education that you can use for your career, even though a lot of your training will be hands on.

Sportsmen, hunters, and gun owners in general usually regard a firearm as a thing of beauty. But not forever! Guns can cease to function. After all, they are mechanical devices, consisting of many parts, which may or may not work together. When a gun breaks down, it is often the subject of scorn and despair, often accompanied by a series of language, which distills down to the question, "what's wrong with this %#@* thing?

The shooter isn't really asking, he already knows what's wrong with it. It won't shoot.

He had his shop in a prominent location, probably near the Long Branch Saloon in the days of America's wild west. The gunsmith was an important character in those early days, along with the dance hall girls, the undertaker and the bartender. He was needed to fix the Winchesters and the Colts every man carried and depended on.

Today, he probably has a small, cluttered shop with a scad of hand tools, operating out of a large (or small) gun emporium. He is there when your gun quits on you.

The gunsmith deals in magic. The gunsmith makes a cursory inspection of the gun you've brought in. He'll tag it with your name and provide you with a claim check. You'll have to leave it, as he's not about to make any quick decisions as to what's wrong. Often, however, he's spotted the trouble with the briefest run down of problems. He's seen em all before, and he will often discern that lack of cleaning or lubrication is the culprit.

Gunsmithing is a skilled trade where training for this career will take place on-the-job, working with a master gunsmith. In a gunsmith training program you will learn how to repair and customize firearms, restore antique guns, and how to install sights and other customized options.
