Cooking Up a Hot Career in Culinary School

Culinary school has become a very popular choice over the last few years due to an
enlightened view of food brought on by programs from the food network, and the travel channel. Students who earn a culinary degree will find that they have a variety of job options available on completion of a culinary degree program.

Beginning in September, Thomas will spend 14 months in London where he'll pursue his master's degree in "international sustainable tourism," which in the United States is more often known as culinary arts and hotel management.

For Thomas, it's the progression of a journey that began in August 2005.

"I looked around at schools and applied to the Culinary Institute of America and the New Orleans Culinary Institute." Thomas was accepted to both schools and was set to go to New Orleans, " right before Katrina hit."

Like many other students who found themselves academically displaced after Katrina, Thomas had to make a decision " quickly. Since upstate New York was more than willing to take him, that's where he went.

Having years of restaurant experience with good cooks and spending lots of time experimenting in the kitchen served Thomas well in his new environment. He mastered the basics and developed the skills of a world-class chef. When it came time for an internship, instead of staying in the New York area, he and a handful of fellow students opted for Europe.

There are hundreds of jobs in the food industry such as chef, caterer, and restaurant cook. There are also programs in culinary school for restaurant management, food and beverage, and catering management. With a culinary arts degree, the possibilities are endless.
