Capella University on Thursday said it’s launched an online doctorate program for business, with specializations in general business and accounting.

“Enrollment in undergraduate and MBA programs is growing, but there has not been equivalent growth in the number of doctoral-qualified business faculty to meet the demand,” said William Reed, acting dean of Minneapolis-based Capella’s School of Business and Technology.

Reed said Capella already has a business and accounting faculty in place with the academic credentials and practical business knowledge to run a doctoral program.

Capella (NASDAQ: CPLA) now has 12 business, organization and management, and information technology doctoral specializations.

The online university has been enjoying business growth amid the present recession, possibly because its courses are a way for professionals to make themselves more marketable in the job market. First quarter enrollment was more than 28,152, up nearly 20 percent from the same period 2008. Revenue was up 17 percent compared to the same period last year.
