There is no guarantee that once you earn your degree you will be able to get a job.  Students in central California who pursued paralegal studies are finding that the market in their area does not have jobs available.

The graduating paralegal plans to continue her studies at California State University, Fresno, but she’s looking for part-time work. It doesn’t look promising.

“There’s not too many job openings for part-time paralegal work,” she said. “My backup plan would be working as a secretary or administrative assistant,” she said. “I’m hoping not to get into food service. But you do what you got to do to get by.”

Many are coming to that realization. Students graduating this spring face a job market tightened by a sluggish economy.

They also face competition from older workers, with more experience and education.
Floyd Hord, career center coordinator at COS, said students may have a tough time getting a job in education, real estate, construction and journalism.

Science-based occupations, especially in the areas of computer technology and design, do present opportunities for students, Hord said. But career center workers don’t discourage students from pursuing a career they might enjoy, he said.

The job market will inevitably rebound, but students looking to ear their paralegal degree should research the market for the area they live in.  Certain metropolitan areas will have more opportunities available than smaller communities.
