What to Consider when Considering an Executive MBA

An executive MBA program is an MBA program that is designed for current business executives who want to pursue higher education in their field without having to quit their current job. This is the ideal program for most executives; however, there are both benefits and drawbacks to enrolling in an executive MBA program. According to MBAMap.com, the advantages and disadvantages are:

Advantages:

  • Class schedules are flexible to allow students to travel to and from the program with minimal disturbance from their work schedule. For instance, classes typically are held every other weekend over the course of two academic years. This means that students will not have to relocate to the school’s location in order to attend classes.
  • Many companies sponsor executive MBA students both financially and with time off to attend classes.
  • A class full of experienced professionals adds to a challenging and stimulating collective-learning experience.

Disadvantages:

  • An executive MBA program requires a high level of commitment from students. It is difficult to balance the demands of work, school, and your personal life.
  • Because of the amount of classroom time taken over the course of a weekend, there is typically little leniency for class absences.

Another drawback of an executive MBA program is that these programs are typically more expensive than traditional MBA programs, and even traditional MBA programs are pricey. However, if you can get tuition reimbursement from your current employer, then this may not be an issue. Executive MBA programs are also great places to meet and network with other professionals in your field, which can be a very valuable asset in itself.
