School Review: UMassOnline

The University of Massachusetts was founded in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1863 as the Massachusetts Agricultural College and later became the University of Massachusetts in 1947. University of Massachusetts has five campuses based in Massachusetts in the cities of Amherst, Worchester, Boston, Lowell, and Dartmouth, as well as online. Their online campus, UMassOnline, has been awarding online degrees since 2001.

The same instructors that teach at the University of Massachusetts' campuses teach the college's online courses. Instructors are required to have at least a master's degree in their field. Additionally, faculty members at University of Massachusetts have been awarded many prestigious awards, including the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, and Draper Award in Engineering. Depending on the program a student enters, UMassOnline offers financial aid in the form of educational grants and loans. Students who wish to apply for financial aid may do so each year by filling out a FAFSA. For tuition and fees, see here.

The programs available through UMassOnline span from trade programs, such as the Urban Landscape and Garden Development Certificate, to master's degree programs, such as the online MBA program. They award more than 30 different educational certificates, one associate's degree, 10 bachelor's degrees, and 16 master's degrees. Some of the newest programs at UMassOnline include a Master's in Applied Linguistics, a Bachelor's Degree in Early Care and Education, and a Certificate of Online Journalism.

The University of Massachusetts is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Programs at UMassOnline are endowed with several awards, including the "Top Ten MBA Program" by the Princeton Review, the "Excellence in Distance Teaching Education" by USDLA, and the "45th Best University System in the World" by the London Times. Online students have access to all of the same resources as campus-based students, including access to one of the largest library systems in New England.
