Many adults returning to college can find the experience to be quite daunting. Transitioning back in to a college student – or doing it for the first time – can be exciting and scary. Adults entering college classes on campus or taking online classes should engage their families in to the process to make the transition easier for everyone involved.
Here are some tips to make the transition a little easier for everyone involved.
Returning student tips
1 Look to family, friends and fellow adult students for help. Share rides, swap notes, exchange stories. If you don’t ask for help, no one will know you need it.
2 Involve your children in your academic experience. Do homework together, read aloud to each other, and share computer shortcuts.
3 Make the Internet your new best friend, if it isn’t already. Granted, you’ll be online more than ever researching papers and reports and possibly taking a class or two. Take a moment to discover listservs and newsgroups geared for adults returning to school. Fire up the search engine and explore topics such as time management and meals in minutes.
