Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology

Veterinary Technology

The Veterinary Technology program at Sanford-Brown College-Fenton (SBC) is designed to provide students with the technical and practical training necessary to work as veterinary technicians who provide competent and humane care toward the emotional and physical well-being of animals. The core curriculum is structured to include a lecture component and a clinical component. The final clinical portion of the curriculum consists of supervised experiences in a clinical environment, which requires competencies, logs, and evaluations completed by the student. At the conclusion of the program, graduates who have diligently attended class and their clinical, studied, and practiced their skills should have the skills to seek entry-level employment as veterinary technicians.

The Veterinary Technology program at SBC has programmatic accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). This means that graduates of the program are eligible to apply to the Missouri Medical Veterinary Board for registration and take the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) and the State Board examination. The requirements for taking and passing the VTNE and the State Board examination are not controlled by SBC and are subject to change without notice. Therefore, SBC cannot guarantee that graduates will be eligible to take the VTNE or State Board examination, at all or at any specific time, regardless of their eligibility status upon enrollment. Further, SBC does not control the state registration for veterinary technicians in Missouri or in any other state. Veterinary Technician

The educational objective of the Veterinary Technician Associate of Applied Science Degree is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to accept entry-level positions upon graduation. Upon successful completion, graduates possess specific skills in the handling and restraint of animal patients, nursing care, veterinary office procedures, sterilization, radiology, pharmacology, hematology, blood chemistry, parasitology, microbiology procedures and surgical assistance. Graduates have a basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, veterinary laboratory procedures as well as the sterile surgical techniques necessary for them to function successfully as Veterinary Technicians in veterinary clinics, hospitals, or research facilities.

Associate of Occupational Studies: Veterinary Technology

The Associate of Occupational Studies in Veterinary Technology program focuses on the handling and health care management of a variety of species, including though not limited to cats, dogs, exotics, lab animals, horses, cattle, small ruminants, and birds. The program provides you with both the classroom and clinical experience that you will need to apply for an entry-level position as a veterinary technician. Graduates of the program may be eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Examination.

Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology

The Veterinary Technology Program at the Platt School of Medical Sciences is specifically designed to provide in-depth study and training necessary to gain entry-level employment in animal health care.

Veterinary Technicians perform many of the same tasks for veterinarians that nurses and other professionals perform for physicians. These tasks generally include: general animal care; surgical assistance; medical treatments; laboratory tests, x-rays; anesthesia; radiology; and nursing and critical care.

Vet Techs typically work closely with Veterinarians in animal clinical health-care settings such as small or large animal hospitals or clinics.

Veterinary Technology

This program is designed to prepare students to enter into a career as a Veterinary Technician. The technician typically will conduct clinical work in a private practice under the supervision of a veterinarian-often performing various medical duties such as giving injections; taking x-rays; anesthetizing patients; offering post-operative care; cleaning teeth, and much more. The curriculum will cover all areas of animal patient care, from lab tests to radiology procedures and counseling for the care of sick animals, as well as preventive measures. Graduates are prepared and must sit for the State Board exam to become Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT).

Veterinary Technicians are key members of any veterinary practice.

The Veterinary Technology program offered by the schools and colleges of Anthem Education Group use a career-focused approach to prepare students for entry-level positions as veterinary technicians.

Students in the Veterinary Technology program are taught the basics of animal physiology and medicine, as well as nursing, disease management, and laboratory skills.  Coursework includes study of exotic animals, animal nutrition, and parasitology.

AS in Veterinary Technology

Veterinary technicians typically work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian doing clinical work such as performing various medical tests and treating medical conditions and diseases in animals.  They also perform laboratory tests and take blood samples, assist with dental care, prepare tissue samples, and assist veterinarians in a variety of other diagnostic tests and procedures. Veterinary technicians work in all phases of animal care, including surgical nursing, laboratory procedures, and office administration. Employment opportunities include positions in veterinary offices or hospitals, biomedical research institutions, zoological facilities, and pharmaceutical and pet care industries.

 

The program, which culminates in an Associate of Science degree in Veterinary Technology, prepares students with the basic knowledge and practical training necessary to function as an entry-level employee in a veterinary medical setting. The Veterinary

Technology (VT) program is carefully balanced between theory and practical instruction, including clinical rotation and field experience during an externship. Fundamentals of chemistry, biology, anatomy, and physiology are emphasized, and graduates are prepared to meet requirements for the California Registered Veterinary Technician State Board Examination. The VT program is not intended as a pre-veterinary program.

Veterinary Technology

This is an 8-quarter program with the last quarter consisting of an externship during which students will work with a veterinarian in a veterinary office. The veterinary technology program is accredited by the Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA), a division of the American Veterinary Medical Association. As a student in this program, you are trained to assist veterinarians in all aspects of a veterinary practice, including patient care, medical administration, surgical preparation, equipment maintenance, radiological procedures, laboratory procedures, public relations and office procedures. Upon graduation, the veterinary technician is qualified to take the National Veterinary Technician Exam and/or any other state exam required for registration, certification or licensure in that state.
