Online Mathematics Degrees

What will I learn in a mathematics degree or training program?

Mathematics is the study of those general rules which explain the universe to us. There are those who say that maths is the thing which is real, any agreement between it and the universe being just a coincidence but that is taking it too far. In a mathematics degree or training program the emphasis is upon teaching you the techniques needed to analyze a situation and then to make a decision about it. There are different areas, such as statistics, calculus and trigonometry, pure and applied maths, and you will almost certainly specialize in one or other of these areas.

What will a mathematics degree or training program qualify me to do?

Some amount of maths is necessary just for everyday life so everyone needs to learn some, even if it is simply basic arithmetic. If you go into a mathematics degree or advanced training program then you are gaining a necessary qualification, by learning the more advanced parts of the subject, for almost any of the science or engineering subjects. There are very few (some 2,500) mathematicians as such, but millions upon millions who use mathematics in their work. Computer programmers,  operations research analysts (average salary around $60,000), statisticians ($58,000) and actuaries ($78,000) along with almost all engineers and other scientists are people who have been through either a degree or an advanced training program in mathematics.
