Online Interior Design DegreesThe interior design field is a highly competitive, rewarding profession. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), persons who hope to enter the field without completing an interior design training or degree program will find it tough vying for open jobs. With formal licensure required in half of the states across the country, the BLS urges that career aspirants undertake post-secondary training -- preferably a bachelor’s degree from an arts or design program, About a third of the 65,000 interior design professionals that held jobs in America in 2004 were self-employed. Many interior designers start their own consulting practice after gaining several years' experience while employed by a design studio, home improvement consultancy, or with commercial and residential building construction companies. Some choose to work in architecture or architectural landscaping businesses. The BLS adds that, with expanding homeowner spending power and the popularity of home improvement television shows demonstrating how renovations can improve property value, the need for experienced and qualified interior design consultants is fashionably on the rise. Interior design training programs offer a broad range of courses that cover design trends, architectural theory, use of space and materials, resource planning, computer-aided 3-D design software, ergonomics, color theory, drafting, perspective drawing, and aesthetics. Courses in consumer communication and client development are also useful for the new designer. Many programs include studio practice and internships with working interior design firms that helps students to build a portfolio as well as a number of professional contacts. Pay varies by locale and by the practitioner's experience. Interior designers, the BLS reports, earned between $40,670 and $71,220 in 2004.
