5 Success Strategies for Distance Learners Distance learning has special challenges. You will probably never see or meet the teacher. You won't have classmates. You don't have a campus full of people studying the same thing. But you can succeed! Plan on it! Follow the simple tips below, and you'll do better in your learning. They may seem pretty basic, but they'll help keep you focused and on track. 1. Set goals for success in your coursework. At the start of a new course looks over your materials to asses the amount of work involved in the course. From there, breakdown your assignments and work load in to manageable portions. This way you can set goals to finish each portion in a timeframe that works for your schedule – until the course is completed. 2. Discover your learning style. Think about what you are studying and look for instances of what you're learning about. You often find real world situations that relate to your course of study. You will tend to be more interested in your study topic if you are involved in some way. Put things in to practice – don't just read about them. 3. Set a regular study timetable, and determine what time is best for you to study. Keep a calendar and stick to your study goals. Following a systematic routine, and having a designated study space will make your goals easier to achieve. Most important, don't over do it. Take time to actually learn the materials and not just race through it. After all, you are doing this to learn something. When you are feeling overwhelmed, take a break or have a snack and some water. You might even need to revise you work load goals if you have taken on too much. 4. Join a study group. You can find study groups online that can discuss your course of study. Search the Internet for bulletin boards or chat rooms related to your topic. Get involved in the community or join a club that may relate to your course of study. You might also want to get a mentor in the field in which you are studying. This can help put your learning in the context of real word work. Don't hesitate to ask questions. If you don't understand something, asking someone in your study group or a mentor can really help with any questions you might need answered. 5. Celebrate your successes. Reward yourself or celebrate your achievements along the way. You should be proud of your accomplishments and attaining your academic goals.
